Finding Aliveness: Dancing in the Garden House

There are times in life when I feel totally and completely alive. The forces that create body-mind synergy align, and total joy emerges.  I experienced this recently when composing a creative project while sitting near the fireplace on a wintry Minnesota day. I was recovering from routine surgery that had resulted in life-threatening complications, and more surgeries.  I left the hospital so weak I could barely walk. But the warm fire, beautiful snowflakes, hot chocolate with whipped cream, and the joy of being with my family created a feeling of aliveness that I think I will always remember.  My body was feeling better, and a state of flow emerged as I in engaged in creative work.

Life is thrilling when you feel alive, but how much aliveness can you expect to have?  I’ll be the first to say, there have been plenty of stretches of time where aliveness seemed out of reach. Yes, plenty of them. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. Even M. Scott Peck, author of the famous self-help book, the Road Less Traveled, described being depressed for a few years. That’s a remarkable admission for someone who dedicated his life to helping others live fulfilled, happy lives. Life means high and low periods, and we come know aliveness as it contrasts with the darkest times of our lives.

I believe we can have more aliveness in our lives—the kind that evokes a thrill of being fully engaged. Like the characters in the video Dancing in the Garden House who dance to amuse the children, we too can learn to dance in the garden house. To dance in the garden house, we must listen to hear the quiet yearnings of our hearts. We can begin to pay attention to what makes us feel alive. We can learn to let go of the fear that keeps us from the joy that is available to us. We can begin to invest in ourselves and know that as we become more joyful and alive, we positively impact our families and friends, and really do change the world.

Today you can create a new aliveness in your life. What do you intend to do with your opportunity?
